My name is Amarys Marine.
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Both my parents immigrated to the United States from Cuba in the late 60’s together with their bad eating habits. You can imagine how difficult it was to go from Cuban food to the Paleo lifestyle. As difficult as this was and is I quickly realized improvements in my health, and all-around performance in running, lifting and cross training.
In fact, I feel more energized now than I ever did when I was in the “whole grain”, “calorie counting” diet so much so that I’m running my first Half-Marathon (ING) THIS WEEKEND!!!
…my father suffered a massive heart attack. It was an eye opener, not only for him but for the entire family.
What was your lifestyle like “before”?
My lifestyle was eating whole grain and counting my calorie intake during the week and splurge eat in the weekends. I tried every single diet known to man! From the South Beach diet to even popping diet pills doctors would prescribe. Sure I’d lose weight but then gain it right back (plus more) in no time.
What made you want to change your habits? What was your big “WHY”?
My key motivator to start watching what I eat and exercise was when my father suffered a massive heart attack. It was an eye opener, not only for him but for the entire family. In 2009 I decided to start Crossfit. There is where I first heard of the Paleo lifestyle, and that’s when I started to see RESULTS.
What made the difference?
I grew up eating rice with black beans, fried pork loins, fried plantains etc. Now I try to eat clean with as non-processed food as I can. I eat grass-fed meat, cage free eggs and nitrate-free bacon. I get my fats from foods like almonds and avocado. I still eat my plantains but instead of frying them in canola oil I use coconut or almond oil. Instead of regular peanut butter, we eat almond butter. Just to give you a few examples.
What advice would you give to people who want to follow in your footsteps?
It makes a whole lot of sense to me. If the food industry injects their meat and chicken with steroids to grow 10 times faster and fatter and then I eat it, then I GET FATTER! It’s that simple. Enjoy what you’re cooking and eating. I believe your attitude towards the food you eat is AS important as the food itself. Of course I sometimes get off track and go for the Cuban goodness. I can’t sit here and tell you I don’t eat processed food AT ALL. I’d be lying. But I do make sure to eat as clean as possible every chance I get. Moderation is KEY!
