AlumniWellness blogger, meditation guru and yogi Light Watkins is a funny guy. So it came as no surprise when he called me to tell me how much fun he had on the Subway here in New York on his last trip. Apparently while he was involved in conversation with a friend he was also solving a Rubik’s cube on the train. Little did he know he had developed something of a following in the train car as he methodically turned the dial on the 80’s most iconic toy.

The Basics: Start with a Strong Enough Reason. The Big WHY.

I grew up spending my summer breaks from school splitting time between visiting family and attending summer camps. In either situation I was surrounded by friends and cousins my age who, fueled by an unlimited supply of candy and sugar, sought out every activity before the street lights came on or the call for evening chow.

Summers ALWAYS involved swimming. Wherever we were it was surely HOT, and what do kids want to do when it’s hot? Get in the POOL!

I’m a vegetarian who has been pretty honest about the challenges I’ve faced adopting a proper diet (ref. The Life and Times of a Carb-o-tarian). Basically I’ve kicked meat off the menu, but I’ve added way too many breads to fill the calorie gap.

Yoga Basics: Exercises for Weight Reduction

I had to share this link because I am usually the first to roll my eyes at some ‘let’s lose weight with yoga’ doodoo talk.

I caught myself pfttttttt’ing at the concept of yoga and it having a direct link to any significant weight loss. I may be wrong, in fact I know I am. I met a woman in my gym who praises regular yoga for her body transformation & weight loss.

She went on to tell me she lost 30lbs of weight by taking up yoga 3 times a week and eating from a clean plate.
